HPI check

Definition

The HPI check is a comprehensive vehicle check that examines the full history of your car prior to purchase.

By checking over 80 data points, the HPI check can identify an extensive range of potential issues with a vehicle, helping you to avoid costs and complications further down the line.

When you take advantage of our service, we perform a free check to ensure the vehicle you’re purchasing does not have anything to hide.
So you have that extra peace of mind, to help you buy with confidence.

What’s included in a HPI check?

As part of your HPI check, your car will receive the following inspections:

Stolen vehicle check

A stolen vehicle check confirms the car you’re buying is legally owned by the seller, helping to prevent you becoming a victim of vehicle fraud.

Car write-off check

If your car has previously been involved in an accident or declared a write-off by insurers, a car write-off check will flag this up.

A written-off car could be potentially dangerous, so it’s vital to check your car is safe and road-worthy prior to purchase.

If you have unknowingly purchased a car that has previously been written-off, depending on the category of write-off, the cost of making the car safe and roadworthy can often be greater than the value of the car itself.

Finance check

A finance check will inform you of any outstanding finance against the vehicle.

If the vehicle has outstanding finance, the lender remains the Legal Owner and has the right to Repossess the vehicle. Without a finance check, you could become then victim of fraud and end up losing the money you have paid.

Registration plate changes

Whilst a number plate can change for legitimate reasons (e.g. to personalise the vehicle), it can also be changed by the seller to hide the vehicle’s past.

The registration plate check examines the number plate history of the vehicle to safeguard you against any potential issues with past registrations.

Vehicle logbook check

Your V5 document - or vehicle logbook, is a document issued by the DVLA detailing the legal owner and registered keeper of the vehicle, and the VIN (vehicle identification number).

The logbook check ensures all documentation is correct and will flag up any false documents that could indicate the vehicle is stolen.

Mileage Check

A seller may tamper with the vehicle’s milometer to hide the true mileage, and trick buyers into overpaying for a vehicle.

A mileage check will use data from the National Mileage Register (NMR), to identify any mileage discrepancy - so you can be 100% confident your car’s mileage reading is accurate.

MOT history check

All vehicles are required by law to have a valid MOT certificate. Without one, the vehicle is not considered to be roadworthy and cannot be taxed or insured.

The MOT history check will confirm your car’s current MOT status and provide full details of previous MOT tests.

A full MOT history can indicate how well the car was looked after by previous owners.
