Putting all the rugged durability of a SUV (sports utility vehicle) into a family friendly package was a genius idea, and now every major motor manufacturer is producing a crossover SUV.

With so many on the market, it can be hard to work out which one is a good fit for you. So, we’ve taken a look at some of the top industry auto magazines – Which? Car, Auto Express and Top Gear – to see which crossover SUVs are the best rated.

Kia Niro

Winning several crossover SUV of the year awards, the latest version of the Kia Niro is everything you need in a crossover SUV. Its biggest and best feature is its use of space, with every inch wrung out of its interior cabin to help stop those little squabbles between your family. It has a striking interior and exterior style, and we particularly love the long sweep of grille just under the front bonnet that makes it seem like the car is smiling. It’s also reasonably priced and has a lot of good tech and features at the entry level.

If you want to go green, then there are a range of electric options to choose between. Self-charging and plug-in versions are all worthwhile, and the fully electric model has a range of up to 286 miles.

Nissan Qashqai

The car that started the crossover craze, how does the Nissan Qashqai stand up in today’s market? While other car makers have raced to catch up, the Qashqai has quietly gone about its business as one of the most popular family cars since it first arrived on the road. Space and comfort are still its best features, with lots of room inside and a suspension that cushions the blows of the road.

The high seating position for the driver may have been replicated in other cars, but it still gives you an excellent view of the road and potential dangers/hazards – essential for the school run. There are also a range of hybrid and electric versions to give you that extra economy when you drive.

Skoda Kamiq

Skoda have been producing some of the best family cars on the market for a few years now. While we love the name of the Yeti, it’s the Skoda Kamiq that is getting the best reviews. Maximising space is vital in a crossover SUV and the Kamiq does it extremely well without detracting from the interior styling. There’s a lot of tech as standard too, so you can get the base model and not miss out on those extra comfort and entertainment features. It’s also got a nice soft suspension that helps cushion you and your family over those bumps.

Renault Captur

One of the best-looking crossover SUVs on the market, the Renault Capture has plenty of substance to go with its style. Like all the best crossovers, it has a nicely cushioned suspension to make it a smooth ride. There is also a lot of space inside, showing just how much thought has been put into its design. You can also adjust the rear seats at the back, so if the boot is empty, you can give yourself more space.

One of the car’s most unique features is its infotainment system, which is upright like a large phone screen, rather than the standard landscape format.

Ford Puma

The Ford Puma is one of the more recent entries into the crossover market. The original Puma was a coupe version of the Ford Fiesta, so it’s undergone a radical transformation into a bigger, more family-ready car. But it’s still based on the highly rated Ford Fiesta, so you get an excellent controlled drive that takes the hassle out of driving.

Dacia Duster

If you are after a brand-new crossover SUV, then you won’t find many cheaper than the Dacia Duster. But, just because it’s affordable, that doesn’t mean you’re getting an inferior car. In fact, the Duster is one of the best-rated crossovers on the market. While its affordable price means there are few frills, what you do get is a car that drives well with good use of space at a very affordable price.

Peugeot 2008

The Peugeot 2008 is one of the smoothest rides you can get on the road, thanks to a suspension that cushions almost every blow on the road. The smart i-Cockpit (Peugeot’s smart driving system) takes some getting used to, but you’ll soon be able to adjust everything about your drive to make it more comfortable for you and your loved ones.

Citroen C3 Aircross

Somewhat more divisive in its looks, we’re still big fans of the bold design of the Citroen C3 Aircross. Like the Captur before it, there’s a rear bench you can slide and readjust to maximise the already impressive amounts of interior space. It has one of the more comfortable drives because of the ludicrously comfortable seats. Add to that efficient engines and a touchscreen infotainment system as standard, and you have a choice that looks great but doesn’t lose any of the crossover essentials.
