If you’re looking to save money on your holidays this year, then the UK has plenty to offer you. While we can’t guarantee you’ll have the beautifully exotic beaches, the guaranteed warm weather, or the different cuisine that can make a holiday abroad so appealing, there are still many surprises and wonders to make a holiday in the UK just as good as one overseas.

But where to go? Here are the top five most popular UK holiday destinations that you could visit this summer.

Cornwall

The closest you’ll get to the Mediterranean climate (geographically at least), Cornwall is known for four things: delicious Cornish pasties, cream teas (remember: jam first, then cream), some of the best surf spots in the country, and the seemingly endless number of beautiful sandy beaches to choose from.

Whether you want to stay on a camp site or in a seaside B&B, there are so many different places to choose from. You can visit Land’s End and see nothing but open ocean in front of you, cross over to St Michael’s Mount before the tide rises, or visit the ruins of Merlin’s castle at Tintagel.

Scottish Highlands

At the other end of the country, the Scottish Highlands have a lot going for it. Almost everywhere you go, you’ll be greeted with a beautifully scenic vista. If you’re feeling brave, you can camp anywhere on public land in Scotland, so it’s a great way to see the sights without breaking the bank.

There are so many walking and hiking routes to choose from, there’s a different route to take each and every day. And then pay a visit to one of the many small villages for some good Scottish grub and a drink or two at the end of a day’s exploration.

Lake District

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK so it’s no surprise to see it as one of the most popular destinations. You can take part in one of the many water sport activities on offer, from sailing to kayaking. If you’re feeling fit, you can climb England’s highest point, Scafell Pike. There’s culture too with Theatre By The Lake and the Beatrix Potter Trail, ideal for book lovers.

Yorkshire Dales

There are few better places to stay than a holiday cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. Whether it’s a gloriously sunny day, or an atmospherically moody rainy day, the countryside here has been designed for photos, ideal for your Instagram.

Aside from the countryside, there are lots of beautiful little villages that you can stop off at. Our pick? Malham, where you can have something to eat or drink and then visit the dramatic rocky scenery etched into the limestone.

Snowdonia

If you are feeling up to a challenge, a walk up Snowdonia is one that the whole family can undertake (and it’s okay to go easy on yourself and take the mountain railway).

Away from the mountain, there are over 100 lakes and lots of craggy peaks to explore too. And if you want to do something over than walking, there’s kayaking, sailing and windsurfing on Bala, Wales’s largest natural lake.
