Scotland – North Coast 500

This road trip has it all. The first is a spectacular drive. You’ll have to stop yourself staring at the incredible scenery all around you as you make your way through fishing villages and dramatic craggy coasts.

Bring your camping gear, as there’s a right to roam in Scotland which means you can camp anywhere on public land. So you don’t have to worry about finding a cheap bed and breakfast, only a nice patch of land that isn’t exposed to the sometimes wilder elements you find this far north.

Wales – Black Mountain Pass

The good thing is that breath-taking views are free for everyone, so it’s about finding those routes that give you the most jaw-dropping moments per mile. The Black Moutain Pass that runs through Wales is one of the best routes in any country, never mind the UK.

Taking in the Brecon Beacons on the route, it’s a stunning road to drive, often used by test drivers and car advertisers to really showcase their vehicle amongst scenery that seems from another world.

There are plenty of campsites along the route, but even if you don’t have the time or the budget to stop along the way, the route can be done in a single day.

England – The Atlantic Highway

There are few better places to visit on a holiday than a beach. Not just because it’s free (except for the occasional parking ticket), but because you can bask in the sun, splash in the surf, or even get close to nature by exploring rockpools. If that sounds like your idea of heaven, then the Atlantic Highway route that takes you along the west coast of Devon and Cornwall is ideal.

Away from the beach, you’ll drive past Exmoor National Park, so you can get out and stretch your legs across rolling moors.

There are plenty of campsites along the way for a cheap stay, and this part of the world is packed full of holiday lets and accommodation. Just try and time it right as the peak season is incredibly popular, and you might find yourself with less budget options to choose from.
