Do you remember the first time you asked for a quote for your car insurance package?

Whether you were contacting the company directly, or using a price comparison site, the quotes given might have given you quite the fright.

No matter if you were a young driver getting insurance for the first time or someone who has arrived late to driving, the first few years of insurance quotes can be a big hit on the bank balance.

And its not just new drivers. If you’ve been unfortunate with your driving and had a few accidents that might or might not have been your fault (we’re not here to judge!), the lack of a no claims bonus or spotless driving record can mean you end up paying a hefty premium.

So what can you do?

The good news is that there are some cars out there that are cheap to insure. If you’re a young driver looking for cheap premiums, a driver who wants to lower their premiums, or simply someone who wants to save money, here are 10 cars with the cheapest insurance.

1. Volkswagen Polo

German efficiency and engineering means that the Volkswagen Polo is one of the cheapest cars to insure. Its overall build quality and reliability means insurers don’t think it will breakdown that often.

Being one of the biggest car companies in the world means that parts are easily available and quick to source.

As for the car? It’s like a Golf but a bit smaller, a bit less powerful. An overall decent car with a low insurance cost.

2. Nissan Micra

One of the most desirable superminis on the market, thanks to the facelift away from the rather strange faux-VW Beetle look it once had, the Nissan Micra is an all-rounder that might not get your pulse racing, but will put a smile on your face when it comes to running costs.

As well as the low insurance costs, it delivers good mileage and is one of the most reliable cars on the road.

3. Skoda Citigo

Skoda make some of the most underrated cars on the market. They may never escape from the bad reputation that the company had in the 80s and 90s, but nowadays you can take almost any car in their range and have a high-quality vehicle.

The Skoda Citigo is one of their smallest models, making it an ideal hatchback for urban living. And with low insurance costs, the Citigo is hard to fault.

4. Vauxhall Corsa

The hatchback variant of the Vauxhall Corsa is another low-cost car when it comes to insurance. Plus, it’s one of the top five, often top three, most popular cars to buy in the UK market, so there are plenty of spare parts around and garages that know how to fix this vehicle. As a car, it scores good in every category. While not excelling, it will do the job and for most drivers, that’s all you need.

5. Hyundai i10

Like Skoda, Hyundai produce a range of cars that seem to excel in every category. Well-designed, cheap to run, beautiful to drive, they are one of the best car manufacturers on the market.

The Hyundai i10 is their supermini super-hatchback, and comfortably fits inside the Group 1 category.

6. Ford Fiesta

The UK’s most popular car almost every year, the Ford Fiesta has perfected the mass-market model, and has everything a driver needs for a smooth, stress-free drive.

It’s also cheap to run, and the low insurance costs are just another bit of icing on an awesome all-round car-sized cake.

Like the Corsa, it has plenty of models on the market so plenty of spare parts and repair centres, plus it has been built efficiently so the parts are not difficult or expensive to replace.

7. SEAT Ibiza

Sharing a lot of parts with Volkswagen means that SEAT can take advantage of their network of dealers and repair centres, as well as their own.

The SEAT Ibiza is their cheapest model and also falls in the group 2 category. While that means it’s a bit pricier than an i10 or a Micra, it has a bit more style that more than makes up for the distance.

Also a bit sexier than the similarly categorised a Corsa or Fiesta, it has that Latin spirit thanks to its Spanish roots.

8. Smart Forfour

What’s important to you in a car, style or substance?

How about very unique style and plenty of substance? The Smart Forfour won’t win any  conventional beauty contests, but you can’t deny its striking looks makes it stand out from the crowd.

The basic model falls into the group 1 category too, so it adds to the appeal. But there are plenty of optional extras to choose from that can add to the appeal, albeit pushing the car into the group 2 insurance category.

9. Ford Ka+

Another of Ford’s smaller cars, the Ford Ka+ is not quite as popular as the Fiesta. The original Ka used to be the quintessential starter car, thanks to its small size, relative cheapness and large number of models on the second-hand market.

The Ka+ is a bit more polished,  but is still small in size and has variants in the group 1 and group 2 insurance categories.

10. Toyota Yaris

The Active variant of the Toyota Yaris is a sprightly little car that’s cheap to run and also cheap to insure, falling comfortably into the Group 2 category. The small engine is efficient and not too thirsty, and the reliability of Toyotas are well known. Plenty of extras to choose from make it a very attractive option for low cost, high quality ratio.

Remember… Choose Your Insurance Group Wisely

Every car is categorised by insurance companies based on a number of factors, from how expensive it is to repair damage and order replacement parts, what car security features come as standard, to the safety features and technology that are available in each particular make and model. The cars with the cheapest car insurance are categorised as Group 1, while the more powerful, expensive and unusual cars, are found in the higher groups.

So if you are curious about any car you’re buying, ask what insurance group it falls in.
