The first images of Lotus’s motorbike have gone online and it looks a stunner. Designed by the man behind Tron: Legacy’s futuristic vehicles, the C-01 will be the first motorbike to ever bear the Lotus marque.
The Lotus C-01 will be constructed by Kodewa, the German auto racing team that manufactured Lotus’s Le Mans 24 Hour race car. Commissioned by Lotus, the motorbike is a collaboration between Kodewa and a group of motorsport veterans. The distinctive design of the C-01 was overseen by the Holzer Group and world renowned designer Daniel Simon.
“We set out to create a bike that isn’t just great to ride but also represents a piece of art in motion,” said Dr Colin Kolles, who came up with the original idea for the motorbike. “Over the years I have seen my fair share of style over substance, what this bike brings to the market is a unique combination of both: state of the art technology with a truly jaw-dropping aesthetic.”
The motorcycle will have an exclusive production run of just 100 units. Each bike will be fully customisable, apparently only limited by the buyer’s imagination. The Lotus C-01 will come in a range of different liveries, some paying homage to Lotus’s extensive history. The motorbike will be fitted with a four stroke 1195cc V-twin engine that gives plenty of power, up to 200 horsepower, and will weigh just under 400 pounds.
Designer Daniel Simon specialises in making vehicles for “imagined futures, pasts, and sci-fi worlds”. Having been senior designer at Bugatti, his work has gone from the road to the silver screen after a book he published of fantasy cars and vehicles titled “Cosmic Motors” caught the attention of Hollywood. He has since gone onto design vehicles for Tron:Legacy and Oblivion, both by director Joseph Kosinski. His “Cosmic Motors” book has just been optioned by Michael Bay, who is looking to produce and direct a summer blockbuster based on the futuristic vehicles created by Simon.
Speaking about his work on the Lotus C-01, Simon said “The design process of the C-01 was a labour of love, there were many challenges, ensuring that the bike not only touches your visual senses with its timeless blend of classic appeal and modern execution, but that is safe and ergonomically sound was critical to me. We have worked hard to create a motorcycle with very distinctive features such as a clean main body, an extremely low side profile, a bold stance, a unique air intake, logical partline solutions and clean graphics.”
Exact details of the motorbike’s sale price or when it will be haven’t been revealed, although there are rumours that the C-01 will be on sale soon. With a design like this and such a limited production run, it will be expected to sell out very quickly.
