No matter what your musical tastes are, when December comes there’s one type of music that you can’t escape – Christmas songs! There are few better ways to get you and your fellow passengers in a great festive mood than with a playlist of the best yuletide tunes. So we’ve collected together a few different playlists of essential Christmas driving songs to help keep you entertained this Christmas.

Old standards

Some of the very best Christmas songs come from the crooners, divas and soul bands of the fifties and sixties. Often covered by newer, inferior music acts, you can’t beat the originals.

Bing Cosby’s ‘White Christmas’ is possibly the most famous, thanks to it being from a film and how we all wish for snow on the big day. ‘Winter Wonderland’ is another popular song for the very same reason, and Darlene Love’s version is still the best. Nat King Cole has one of the best voices ever recorded, and his rendition of ‘The Christmas Song’ is perfect for late evening drives where you want to power down.

If you’re feeling a little melancholy, then the king Elvis Presley’s song ‘Blue Christmas’ is an essential. But if you want to get the party started, you can’t beat ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ by Brenda Lee.

70s and 80s classics

While perhaps not as classy as the old standards, songs from the seventies and the eighties have become some of the most loved on the Christmas playlist. ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’ by Wizzard really gets you going with a great singalong chorus. Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ is another glam rock essential.

Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ has become the butt of a few jokes, with the Wham! challenge inviting people to go as long as possible each Christmas before hearing the iconic song. Greg Lake’s ‘I Believe In Father Christmas’ is a very different type of song that has to be on the playlist. And if you fancy a singalong, Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ has a vocal part for everyone in the car.

New essentials

Writing the perfect Christmas song is a difficult challenge that seemingly every music artist tries at least once. The Darkness may have faded from the charts, but their song ‘Christmastime (Don’t Let The Bells End)’ is a rock-infused must. Leona Lewis won The X Factor, but whether that’s a pro or con in your book, her Christmas song ‘One More Sleep’ is surprisingly catchy.

Gabriella Cilmi is a name you might not recognise, but her song ‘Warm This Winter’ is another new addition to the essential Christmas songbook. And if you want a good cover of a classic, The Pussycat Dolls version of ‘Santa Baby’ is really good.

And the best Christmas driving song?

We’d be tempted to go for ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ as the ultimate Christmas driving song, because, well the clue is in the title! But we think Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has everything you need. The excitement of the opening xylophone notes, a fantastic singalong chorus, and an appeal that crosses the generations. Greatest Christmas song ever? It might well be.
