Hamilton wins at Monza

Lewis Hamilton kickstarted his Formula 1 title bid with a win at Monza. But did Rosberg let him win? Plus, we have news from BTCC and the Sprint Car Series.

Formula One – Best friends again?

Hamilton claimed his sixth victory of the season in an exciting Italian Grand Prix. But conspiracy theories surround his race win after Rosberg’s mistake allowed his Mercedes team mate through. Coming into the firs turn, Rosberg made a mistake and left the track, moving through the chicane before rejoining the track. This allowed Hamilton to pass Rosberg, and go on to win the race. Rosberg finished in second place.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called the theories paranoid. “Only a paranoid mind could come up with such an idea. I think there was lots of pressure on Nico because Lewis was so quick yesterday and you could see that today as well.”

The race started off disastrously for Hamilton, when his car failed to initiate its launch map, meaning the Mercedes driver had to start the race manually. But Hamilton recovered and quickly caught up with his team mate, before passing him to take victory. With six races remaining, Hamilton trails Rosberg by twenty two points.

Elsewhere on the track, Ricciardo finished ahead of Vettel once again after a keenly fought battle between the pair. There was no sense of team orders or even team seniority as the Australian beat his German compatriot to fifth place. Overall it was a good weekend for Mercedes, with Williams-Mercedes taking third (Massa) and fourth (Bottas) place.

BTTC

The British Touring Car Championship grows closer to being decided as Colin Turkington took a double victory at Rockingham. The eBay motors driver had never won at the Northamptonshire circuit before. Turkington now leads the championship with 366 points, ahead of Jason Plato in second and Gordon Shedden in third place. With two race weekends remaining, Turkington looks set to capture his first championship victory since 2009.

Sprint Cup Series

Our spotlight moves across the pond to America, where the Sprint Cup Series is in full swing. In a dramatic finish to the race, driver Kerry Madsen won by just 0.005 seconds. The high speed race is still recovering from the death of driver Kevin Ward Jr. The victory was the sixth of the season for Madsen. The 0.005 seconds gap was the closest in Outlaws history.
