London has secured a second race on the calendar in the opening season of the Formula E series. It isn’t just any random spot on the calendar though; London has managed to grab the final race of the season in addition to the one it already had. Not only does this mean we will see a double header feature right here in our capital but it also means London will host the crowning of the first ever Formula E champion!

The CEO of Formula E, Alejandro Agag spoke about the plans: “Discussions for our London Formula E race have been many months in the planning so we’re delighted to be awarded planning approval by Wandsworth Council. Our thanks must go to all the parties involved for their hard work and co-operation, especially Mayor Boris Johnson, Wandsworth Council and the various stakeholder groups with interests in the location.”

The races will be held on the 27th and 28th of June in the beautiful Battersea park right next to the Thames. Battersea Park really is a fantastic location for the races, just over the river from Chelsea and with a backdrop of one of the most famous skylines in the world it is sure to be quite the spectacle.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, even chimed in on the new plans! “Formula E is set to be a superb addition to London’s sporting calendar. The atmosphere will quite literally be electric and Battersea, which is already booming with the buzz of regeneration, will be alive with the excitement that this new, world-class event will no doubt spark.”

The races won’t be the only feature of the weekend though; visitors will also get to see the Formula E School series! Groups of children from ten local schools have built their own electric kit cars and will race them around the track, a nice extra treat for spectators.

Virgin Racing Team driver, Sam Bird, who is currently second in the championship sounds like he is very excited for the double header in his home country. “The track is in the beautiful Battersea Park, right next to the River Thames, just across from Chelsea and with some of the most famous features of London’s skyline in the background. The layout itself seems to combine fast straights, a couple of high-speed bends, as well as some challenging chicanes and braking zones. I think the London ePrix spectators will be treated to some close, fast racing with plenty of action and overtaking. The organisers have done a good job with this layout and I can’t wait to race there, in front of my home crowd!”

If you are in London in on the weekend of the 27th I highly recommend you go and check out the Formula E races. It looks like the Battersea park track is going to be a great place to witness the final and with the way it’s shaping up right now we could have a serious showdown on our hands.

There is much more than just racing going on though, there are all kinds of activities taking place across the weekend and stalls to do a bit of shopping at. There will also be the Formula E village to take a look around, it’s sure to be a great couple of days out!
