As of May 2018, the MOT test rules are set to change. The primary focus of the new test is to be stricter on emissions.

The tests will be graded in three categories: dangerous, major and minor. It’s thought that the new rules could be costly for diesel car drivers, but are a positive step towards minimising the negative impact our cars have on the environment.

For example, vehicles that emit ‘visible smoke of any colour’ will be issued an automatic fail.

The changes, which come into effect on 20^th May 2018, will also mean that vehicles that have had their diesel particulate filters removed or tampered with will fail, unless it can be proven that the alterations were made to clean the filter.

The criteria, as set by the DVSA, will also take steering into account. An oil leak from the steering box could range from a minor fault to a more serious one, depending on the severity of the leak.
