The Lotus Esprit S1 Submarine is on sale.

A classic car dealer in Nevada, USA has listed the famous Lotus Esprit S1 submarine car on eBay. Now you can drive a car like Bond, if you have $1,000,000 to spare.

The Lotus Esprit S1 appeared in “The Spy Who Loved Me”, famous for the scene where it transforms from road car into submarine. A total of six Esprit’s were built for use in the film. The car on sale is one of just three remaining. It was restored by Rick’s Restorations and featured on the US History Channel’s “American Restoration” television programme.

But those looking to drive away like Bond will be disappointed as this car has no engine. Used as a prop, the Lotus Esprit S1 will need some hefty modification if you want to drive it away. But if you can afford to splash out $1,000,000 on a movie prop, what’s a few more thousand dollars to make it roadworthy?

Elon Musk, tech billionaire and founder of Tesla Motors, bought one of the Bond Lotus Esprits at auction last year and intends to transform it into a fully functioning amphibious vehicle.

One of the most famous Bond moments

The Lotus Bond car is famous for one scene in particular. Being chased by an enemy helicopter, Bond is forced off the road and into the water, seemingly destroying the car in the process. But with a casual flick of a switch, the Lotus transforms into a fully functional submarine, complete with Surface to Air missiles that Bond handily uses to dispatch his pursuer. Chase over, Bond casually drives the Lotus up the beach and back onto the road.

Not the only iconic film vehicle on sale this week

Also on sale this week, Peter Fonda’s Harley Davidson. The famous chopper with the stars and stripes paintwork appeared in the cult road movie “Easy Rider” way back in 1969. Named “Captain America”, two bikes were made for the film in case one broke down. The distinctive paintwork was designed by two African American bike builders, Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy. The second bike and the bikes belonging to Dennis Hopper’s character were both stolen after filming completed.

The remaining Captain America bike sold at auction for £840,000 at auction last weekend.
