The 7th to the 17th March saw one of the most important events of the car calendar – the Geneva Motor Show. First held in 1905, the show has been host to some of the most beautiful and important cars in automotive history. From the debut of the Jaguar E-Type, to the more recent Lamborghini Huracan, Switzerland welcomes car makers and car lovers to come and see the future of motoring.

This year saw a bonanza of beautiful cars on display, from top of the range supercars to more middle-of-the-road affordable models. Here is our selection of highlights from this year’s event.

Aston Martin Lagonda SUV

One of the most unusual cars in Aston Martin’s history was the iconic and striking Lagonda. Known for its big and blocky shape, it’s a far cry from the sleek curves of the DB5 or Vanquish that are more closely associated with the Aston Martin brand. So the idea of the Lagonda making a return, only this time as a SUV, is both surprising and yet, in some ways, unsurprising giving the model’s unique history.

Unveiled as a concept car at the show this year, the Lagonda SUV is a striking model. Even when stationary on the show floor, the car looks like it is in motion, thanks to the bold design that makes it almost blurred. When this SUV does make it to market, it will definitely be a lot nicer to look at than the more run-of-the-mill Qashqais or Yetis on the road.

Bugatti Voiture Noire

If you have a spare £10 million, then you might be able to purchase Bugatti’s latest hyper car – the Voiture Noire. The model has been designed for one of Bugatti’s most wealthy collectors, and signals the company’s shift from simply making incredible supercars to designing and tailoring these labours of luxury specifically to customers’ desires. The question we’re asking – “Does it come in any colour other than black?” With a name like Voiture Noire (literally translating to ‘black car’ in English), we wait with baited breath for ‘jaune’, ‘vert’ and ‘bleu’ versions!

Kia Imagine

It’s no secret that the car manufacturer’s from the far east are a lot further ahead in their attitudes to electric cars. The Kia Imagine is one of the newest to be unveiled, which was revealed to the world in Geneva.

The concept is for a luxury executive saloon, that has more than a few hints of American muscle to it. The Imagine really doesn’t look like any other electric car currently on the market, which it seems was the intention. Kia’s vice president of design Gregory Guillaume described it as a category-buster. Another nail in the coffin of the idea that electric cars are boring?

Peugeot 208

Slightly less exciting than the high concept electric and supercars included in our highlights so far, the debut of the Peugeot 208 was still a big thing for consumers. It has been built to challenge the Fiesta’s and Corsa’s domination of the smart supermini market. The second generation of the 208 will hope that the smart technology, refined design, and attention to detail will make it a big hit on the road. As well as the latest safety features and driver assistance tech, a fully electric model is also on the works. But those after a diesel version will be disappointed, as there’s just a single variation to feature a diesel engine.

Ferrari F8 Tributo

It has always been a question of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ that supercars will start turning to hybrid and electric technology. Consciousness of climate change and carbon footprints means that even the super-rich are starting to care about their impact on the world. Well, at least they want to make us think that!

Ferrari have got in on the action with the announcement of a new hybrid hypercar to be launched next year. For now, there is the Ferrari F8 Tributo, designed to replace their previous 488 model. You can expect to turn plenty of heads and get mouths watering with the incredible body and interior design of this latest hypercar from the famous prancing horse.

Skoda Kamiq

Come firmly back down-to-earth, the Skoda Kamiq is the Czech company’s compact SUV. Stepping into the crowded crossover market, the Kamiq is smaller than Karoq or Kodiaq, and is more in competition with the Nissan Juke and SEAT Arona.

The bold front headlight design is here, giving it the look of four eyes staring out onto the road above a mean looking grille. A lot of the design principles have been taking from last year’s concept car – the Skoda Vision X. Expect to see this on the road at the end of 2019/start of 2020.

Honda e Prototype

honda-ejpg

Designed for futuristic megacities where the road is full of thousands of cars – wait is this the future or the M25 in rush hour? Either way, the Honda e Prototype is the company’s aim at a fully electric car that is easy on the eye as well as the wallet. First premiering in Geneva back in 2017, this fully formed prototype is expected to be on the road at the end of 2020. So if you dream of driving something from a science fiction film, then start saving up. And remember, any money you save now will easily be compensated by the money saved on this four-door’s low running costs and tax bracket.

Volkswagen I.D. Buggy

The most striking car at the motor show this year wasn’t one of the hypercars on display, but a curio produced by Volkswagen – the I.D. Buggy. Perhaps getting us ready for our desert-strewn post-climate apocalypse future, the I.D. Buggy is a fully electric entry into the rarely seen beach car market. 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds, you’ll be down by the beach in no time. Almost like a child’s toy blown up to adult size, this concept is unlikely to hit a showroom any time soon. Which is a pity as cars with such a bold and different design are increasingly rare on the road.

Looking For An Upgrade?

Not all these cars have made it into the market yet, and thanks to their nauseating price - most of these models will always remain out of reach for the majority of drivers. However, if you’re looking for a more realistic upgrade we can help. With cars starting at £91 per month, we make owning a car affordable for everyone.
