If you’ve been thinking about changing your car, you might be asking yourself a question that you never asked yourself when buying a new car before – should I choose electric or petrol? Whereas even five years ago, electric cars weren’t that desirable, today more and more people are deciding to go green and go electric.

But which option is the best one for you? We’ve put together a list of some of the pros and cons of each engine type, so you can decide for yourself.

Electric: The Pros

The biggest advantage of owning an electric car is that your running costs are dramatically reduced. You don’t have to pay for petrol, which can be one of the biggest expenses you face as a driver, especially with prices fluctuating as they do recently. You also generally pay lower car tax than petrol engine cars, reducing costs further.

For many, the effect on your carbon footprint is one of the reasons why you switch to electric. Cutting your emissions to zero with an electric engine is good for those with environmental concerns, and will have a positive effect once more people across the planet go battery powered.

Petrol: The Pros

The biggest advantage of petrol cars at the moment is the range. You can go lot further on a full tank of petrol than you can on a fully charged battery. So if you regularly drive long distances and don’t want to factor in potentially long charging breaks, a petrol engine might be more suitable.

With petrol cars, you also get a wider range of vehicles to choose from. If you need a specialist vehicle, then you might find it easier to get a petrol model. You may also find you have more garages available to you that can repair your car, whereas electric vehicles might need more specialist work.

Which is right for you?

What you need to do is take a look at the different pros and cons and see which ones affect you the most. Why not have a look at the different car listings and see what electric and petrol cars are in your budget? That way you can judge them by their price as well as the pros and cons.
