Styling

Both BMW and Audi have very distinctive designs, in particular the front end. The BMW’s trademark front grill and headlights give the car an almost aggressive look. The 3 Series has a longer bonnet than the A4, but both have a similar design to the main body. This is partly down to the way car designs are becoming more homogenous, with safety standards and aerodynamic design principles being replicated across brands.

The A4 has a slightly sportier feel, as expected with the Audi brand. There seems to be more straight edges, with a harsher angular feel to the car’s lines. Both cars are very easy on the eye and won’t be an eyesore in the office car park. They both give a professional, executive feel so if you use your car for work or want to impress, then either of these would make a great choice.

Interior

As expected with these top mark German cars, the interior styling is of a very high standard. The Audi A4 comes with Audi’s in-car computer and entertainment system – the “MMI infotainment” system. The overall design and feel for the interior is top notch, with all the switches and controls having a distinctive tactile feel to them.

The 3 Series has an excellent seating position, with the controls ergonomically designed so you feel comfortable. The A4 has slightly more legroom so might be a bit better suited to the taller driver. As always, these cars come with a variety of different trim levels to choose from, so you should be able to find the accessories you desire from one of the options available.

Performance

The latest engines have all the efficiency you expect. The newest Audi engines are some of the most efficient on the market, with power up by 21% despite fuel consumption being down 25%. The efficiency changes do not have too negative an affect on the car’s speed, with the car able to do 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. Tests conduced by What Car? had the Audi A4 faster in the acceleration stakes.

The BMW 3 Series is no slouch though and generally has a more sporty feel to the A4. Its rear wheel drive gives the car excellent handling and makes curves fun to attack. Different driving modes also mean you can adjust the car’s performance and suspension to the conditions and drive you desire.
