2021 is a year where we all hope things return to normal. As things will open up again, we will be travelling around the country again, perhaps even more than before as we take the chance to head out on the road and explore again. So, there’s a chance that you may need to change your car this year.
But when is the best time to buy a car? It’s a question we all ask ourselves when the time comes to get a new motor. Is there a better month of the year to make the purchase? Here are our tips for the best time to buy a car in 2021.
Twice a year, the DVLA starts issuing a new number plate to signify the changing dates. In 2021, this will be XX21 and XX71 number plates. These are launched in March and September respectively. Car makers will be using the change in the plate to promote new car sales, as some buyers will hold off until the plate has changed, making their car seem newer, even if it’s just be a few days.
If you are buying a new car, it can be a good time to look before the plate changes. Car dealers might want to shift some of their old number plate stock in time for the new one, so you may get a better price on a car at these times, especially if you are good at negotiating!
The months after the plate change are good if you are looking for a used car. Dealers will be taking lots of part exchanges as part of their sales boom, and they will want to get rid of this stock if they can.
Every car dealer will have their own monthly, quarterly and yearly sales targets. So, if you are looking to get an absolute bargain, you may want to wait until it’s almost Christmas. Dealers will be trying to shift stock for the new year and may have offers in place to hit their targets. Have a look and don’t be afraid to negotiate.
For the majority of companies, the tax year ends in April. Again, dealerships will be looking to make a few more sales before they start their accounts afresh for the new year. So, start looking before April and you might be able to grab a good deal.
Whichever month you decide to buy your car, have a look at the very start of the month. For some reason, prices seem to be lower at this time. It could be because they want to start the month well and get a few sales completed, or just a quirk in the statistics.
